The Big Take-Over

11/10/10 (issue No. 67)
The youngest Cowsills member’s second solo album is full of loss: her adopted home-town of New Orleans’ destruction by Hurricane Katrina and the deaths of friends and family (brothers Barry and Billy).  Her vocal huskiness accents the poignancy of the lyrics; I defy anyone to listen to “Could This Be Home” without tearing up. In this context, her cover of Jimmy Webb’s “Galveston”  (a 1969 #4 for Glen Campbell subtitled “for Texas”) takes on extra depth.  It’s an uplifting album nonetheless, showing the strength of the human spririt and finishing with an update of her beautiful “Crescent City Snow,” now ending with a rollicking tribute to the Saints’ inspiring Super Bowl win.  (
