After the show we high tailed it to the land of my first breath…..Canton Ohio!!!!!!!!!!!! We arrived in the wee hours at the Casa De Dixon Jones! Mom and Dad were waiting up for us (don and Marti that is!) and we talked until 3am in the first of a three night chatathon! We played the next night at Don’s Basement were upon The wonderful Marti Jones and Don Dixon sat in with Russ and I for a really fun show featuring audience participation in the form of reminesing ! We had old baby sitters….Gretchen….We had Ms. Phyllis, who gave my mom/ me, a baby shower back in 1959! Also along was her daughter Tina who was the Ohio president of the Cowsill fan club! AND a brother of a guy who played little league with one of my brothers! Epic right?
Next day spent hunting down birth house (found it, thanks Phyllis!) hospital born in and church attended by a very young Cowsill Family! Whew!!! Susan,

A voice from your past. Since we haven’t been in touch for a long time I just wanted to make contact and find out what’s happening with you, Russ and the family.

Whatever happened to the Psycho Sister album you were working on?

I still have the good memories meeting you and the family when you all gigged in Sellersville, PA several years ago. Hope you come back for a return engagement.
    Please take care!

THIS IS A SONG ABOUT LOVE, I CAN ONLY SAY IT WITH A SONG. WHAT MATTERED TO ME. WAS THE RIGHT TO BE FREE. LIKE I’LL BE SOMEDAY I’M WAITING FOR MY HEART TO LEAD THE WAY. THE PLACES I’VE SEEN. AND THE ROAD IN BETWEEN. MAKE ME WONDER WHY. I’M SEARCHING FOR MY DREAMS UP IN THE SKY. I HEARD THE CALL. AND IN THE MIRROR I SAW THE WRITING ON THE WALL. AND I HAD TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU. HE. THE FACE THAT I’VE KNOWN SEEMS SO LOST AND ALONE. WHEN YOU’RE FAR AWAY. I’M COMIN FOR YOU BABY RIGHT AWAY. THE PLACES I’VE SEEN. AND THE ROADS IN BETWEEN. MAKE ME WONDER WHY. I’M SEARCHING FOR MY DREAMS UP IN THE SKY. I HEARD THE CALL. AND IN THE MIRROR I SAW THE WRITING ON THE WALL. AND I HAD TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU. WHAT MATTERED TO ME. WAS THE RIGHT TO BE FREE. LIKE I’LL BE SOMEDAY. I’M WAITING FOR MY HEART TO LEAD THE WAY.

    Hi Susan,

I am looking very forward to seeing you and the family for the first time at The Arcada Theatre on 5-2-14 I was a Cowsills fan way back when the records came out…saw you all resurface in the nineties on the various talk shows. Then, in the last year I became aware of your work, which is amazing.. and recently viewed the Family band, and have a strong respect for all of your siblings and yourself. Keep on Going… your spirit and energy are contagious. I hope to be able to meet/greet you & family at the gig.

I watched the Cowsill story the other night on Directv. I am so glad I saw it. I am a huge fan and never understood why you just disappeared so many years ago. Your family really overcame alot of struggles and I just wanted to let you know what a touching story it was. I’m so sorry to hear that Barry and Bill have passed but I’m thrilled to know that you are still preforming. God bless to you all and continue to fight the good fight. Thanks for all the memories.

Hello Susan. Just watched documentary and must say that growing up in that time period I never realized what good musicians you guys were ( In my neighborhood if you were a Cowsills fan you got beat up). Anyway I don’t know if you look at message board of Imdb but many people asked about a Cd of songs in the doc, especially “those were some” and ” don’t look back”. There were another couple of nice songs which added to your “hits” would make a nice Cd. Anyway, I certainly can relate to many of the family issues and admire your lack of bitterness and let’s move on attitude. Continued success Susan.

    Susan,

I remember the great sound of the Cowsills and recently saw the family documentary. So I began listening to the group again and discovered how great the group is today and what a talented artist you are. Your voice and song writing blew me away. The cover of ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ is incredible and ‘Just Believe It’ is an awesome original. Thank you for sharing your gifts today.
I hope to see one of your live shows soon.

P.S. Prayers are with you on the loss of Richard.

Hi Susan. I’m a Peruvian born in 1958. At the time in Lima I could only heard American stuff that came from 45 rpm imports and one day I saw your “Hair” video on TV.I was really impressed by your powerful harmonies, of couse I couldn’t understand a word you sang! Now I live in France and the other day I spent a whole day on the Internet trying to track you back (I didn’t even know you were The Cowsills) and I finally found the Hair video and this led me to you. I ‘m so sorry for Barry and Bill. 50 years later, you still sound great, no dubs, no nothing, just the real thing. You know, in Lima, in the early 70s, we loved Sixto, but we never knew who he was, and I guess you two guys have something in common, some sort of, shall we say, “sincerity” that’s beyond words and languages, you can feel it , but can’t always describe it. I just want to say, what a talented artist and beautiful woman you are! You and Guss sound great. Please, if you ever tour in France, let me know. All the Best, Ricardo Flores

Wow! What a story! How fun! And thank you for all the kind words. We’d absolutely love to play France…no plans at the moment except for Russ doing a drumming gig with Rosie Ledet in Roubaix and another city early October. Russ and I may be touring Germany– and possibly a few connecting countries, with The Psycho Sisters to promote our new album. That’d probably be in late January or February. ?? Stay tuned Ricardo!

The Cowsill songs in the documentary are on albums already. Some Good Years is from the album Global. Check it out! Other unrecognized songs may have been from my solo CDs Just Believe It and Lighthouse, since the filmmaker used several of those too.
Thank you for liking us on the DL and not getting beat up. Hopefully that’s not still the the case and you are safe to enjoy listening to whoever without threat of physical harm! Hahaha!
    Thank you again.
    Peace,
    Susan

Hi, Susan! Hope you get this message. To let you know I SO enjoyed seeing you, Bob, and Paul “Unplugged” in New Hampshire and Bath, Maine. Wasn’t Bath, ME an adorable town! The next day I toured the town and took a video of it. You may or may not remember, I sat in the front row at the Chocolate Church venue and I introduced you to my newfound friends from Denver who were sitting a seat away from mine (Tanya and Chris). They were the couple whom you guys autographed their albums…remember Bob signed the “Captain Sad” one twice? I have always met such nice people at your shows! That couple and I became instant friends and I will be visiting them in Denver. I asked Bob how to get you guys to come to Maryland and Tanya would like to get you guys to come to Denver also. Gotta tell ya though, I plan to fly next time…that turnpike drive from MD was Whoa!

Not sure how to get you guys booked. And I got wind that your 2015 tour is called “Happy Together”? But also a 50th anniversary? My sister works for a museum in Raleigh, NC where they have many performers (recently, Judy Collins) and wants to try to get you guys booked there. I recall you guys have done Raleigh area, and my sister missed out seeing you. Can’t remember what venue you guys have done in that area. Could you let me know if you guys will be including Raleigh, NC area next year?

And thanks for singing Happy Birthday to me. I’ve just turned the big “60” but still feel that “kid” in me…I’m still young at heart, and that’s what counts, right? You guys looked and sang beautifully. I look forward to seeing Russ, Brandon and Ryan again next year.

When you guys are around, we all are always “happy together”!!!

    Love ya!

    SHER

I never new about the family dynamic of your dad’s alcoholism. I am an alcoholic, sober, in AA since 01/03/1970, 44+ years, in a row, no drinking. Did your dad ever make any attempt at stopping, or going to AA?
Also, “Some Good Years”…. great tune, pulling out pluses from bad times.. Love the tune. my direct email is ohboy408@yahoo.com

Question(s).. Some times in the video’s of the Cowsills singing, there are sometimes 5 boys singing and sometimes 4. Did one brother go off to Vietnam, Bill I’m guessing. And did the one twin brother (Richard) ever sing with the group? Because like I said before there are sometimes 5 brothers preforming and there are 6 boys in the family.
    Sincerely
    David kirkpatrick

No, Bill did not go to Vietnam. Richard did however, and never sang with the group. Four boys were Bill, Bob, Barry and John. Then, Paul joined around the same time as I did, which made 5 boys at that point. Then, Bill left the group, going back to four boys with Bob, Paul, Barry, John.
Bill, Barry, and most recently Richard are no longer walking the planet. So, now, down to three, though John plays with the Beachboys fulltime so doesn’t perform shows with the Cowsills except on very rare occasions.

Thanks for writing Bill. To answer you question, my dad–to my knowledge, never attempting any type of recovery. Congratulations on your 44+years! That means I only have 42 to catch up to you!
    Much love,
    Susan

And yes, Bath was adorably awesome!
OH, and we will gladly go to Maryland, Denver, Paris, Sydney, Raleigh, or any other city that wants us! Y’all still have to see our BAND though! We’re badass. Paul Revere said “the best of all the bands on the oldies circuit.”
