Karen b. Locke
A Summary

Karen b. Locke, an established Artist of Russian and Austrian descent, was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised on the East Coast of the United States.

Her Artistic development began at an early age in the small East Coast town of Allentown, Pennsylvania. It was here she began her long and now noted career by hand painting personalized greeting cards at the tender age of 9 years, utilizing a distinctively Amish influence as a result of that culture permeating her day to day existence in this close knit community.

It was from this period on that Ms. Locke soon levied her abilities into all forms of mixed media and was eventually accepted to THE SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS in Manhattan. After graduating, Ms. Locke began her extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, eventually arriving in Southern California. She has touched upon virtually every conceivable facet of her craft during her extensive and colorful career, all the while honing her abilities as a seasoned, classically trained Artist. Ms. Locke has remained always conscious of the responsibility she maintains to the integrity of her works, to the world around her, and to the field of modern art, as one of its humble servants.

Ms. Locke now continues her works and private teachings on a daily basis, with a never-ending imagination and distinctive style. Her work is a delicate balance of gentle directional strokes, and strong hard-lined shapes within the image to capture both the feminine and masculine aspects of the piece. Ms. Locke’s unique signature approach to her work has been described as, "A living line."

ARTIST STATEMENT

Ms. Locke’s singular work methods and approach begins not from a specifically planned subject, but arise from an inspired concept idea. The difference between subject art and inspired art is finite and separates the genres by personal preference of both Artist and Collector. Ms. Locke’s approach lies heavily within the abstract (n: an abstract genre of art; artistic content depends on internal form rather than pictorial representation) while also contrasting that format by encompassing familiar imagery on a subliminal level. The resulting experience is a visual journey into the soul of an artist, laid bare and unhindered.

The "idea" will generally manifest often weeks or days before ink or brush are put to canvas. It forms, as all true art does, form the need to visually express the human emotional state itself in all its complex and varying forms. An initial sketch is put on the selected canvas or page in a few short minutes. It serves, as a template springboard from which the finished piece will evolve, but is not the driving blueprint for the project in any steadfast sense. The piece begins, ebbing, flowing toward its own creation autonomously through the feelings of the Artist, the canvas taking on a life of its own. With each minute detail directing the path to the next, finally, the piece takes form through Ms. Locke’s unique style and technique. Each piece is created at it’s own rate. Some are created over days, others months, while even others in Ms. Locke’s private collection have and may take years to complete.

The completion of a Karen b. Locke creation depends greatly on the direction the piece takes; it’s scale and the level of detail involved.
